What is CO2 Laser Treatment?

At Ocean Drive Dermatology in Vero Beach, Fl, we utilize two types of ablative lasers in our offices. The first is erbium, which is part of our Sciton family of lasers (Contour, ProFractional, Halo, BBL, BBL HERO, ClearV, ClearSilk, and MicroLaser Peel). The second is CO2, part of our Rohrer Aesthetics family of lasers and energy devices (Phoenix, Pixel RF Microneedling, Bodytone, and Bodysculpt). Both ablative lasers excel at resurfacing, scar revision, and bringing back that healthy glow to your skin.

What can CO2 Laser Treatment do for me?

In Vero Beach CO2 lasers are commonly used on the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands to help remove brown spots, stimulate collagen and elastin proteins, tighten pores, and reduce lines and wrinkles. Originally, CO2 lasers were developed for deep resurfacing and sometimes caused pigment changes, specifically hypopigmentation. The Phoenix is not prone to this type of problem because it utilizes a Micro-Thermal Zone Scanner, which divides the laser beam into small shafts of light. We call this a CO2 fractional laser, which is safer than full-field resurfacing while still providing many of the same benefits as full-field resurfacing. Depending on the area we are treating, the laser can be fine-tuned to treat an area as small as 5 mm, all the way up to 30 mm in a single pass.

Another benefit of Phoenix CO2 laser at Ocean Drive Dermatology in Vero Beach, FL, is the Swift Scan Enclosure which makes treating the hands quickly, precisely, and easily. Typically, adding Radiesse, a calcium hydroxyapatite filler, to the hands during the same treatment can add missing volume. This allows the Phoenix CO2 laser to make the skin look younger and healthier while the filler replaces lost volume. This filler will typically last over a year. Many patients will add this to their yearly beauty routine, just like quarterly Botox and yearly filler injections.

One of the most common questions we get asked is, “What’s the best laser for me?” Honestly, part of the results is the aggressiveness of the laser, choosing the correct laser for the issue, and who is performing the laser treatment. Experience with laser resurfacing is extremely important. If there is a side effect that occurs with the laser, are you somewhere that you can trust to address the laser complication? Laser energy is like a scalpel. Once the energy is delivered into the skin, there is no undo button. Just like once an incision is made by a scalpel, there is no way to undo the cut.

Results, Recovery and Aftercare

Following a treatment with the CO2 laser Vero Beach patients will have downtimes similar to other fractional lasers that we operate daily. Their downtime could be as little as a few days all the way up to several days until healed. The downtime is related to how aggressive the treatment is, but the results are also related to how aggressive the treatment is. More downtime typically equals more results. And just like our other lasers, we offer CO2 resurfacing with our surgical procedures in the operating room with Dr. Durkin and Dr. Chim. This allows you to have one set of downtime from both your surgical and laser procedure. However, the majority of CO2 resurfacing we do is awake in our Laser Center at Ocean Drive Dermatology.

Is CO2 Laser Treatment Painful?

Just like all the other lasers at Ocean Drive, we offer specialized topical numbing medication and ProNox to make the treatment more comfortable while enabling you to drive to and safely from the office. Depending on the area treated, we offer medical-grade recovery products, as well as red light therapy the day after treatment to speed up the healing process. CO2 fractional laser treatment can be combined with other lasers at Ocean Drive Dermatology in Vero Beach, Florida.

Can I combine the CO2 Laser with other laser treatments?

A typical combination is BBL (Broadband Light) with Phoenix CO2 laser. This gives you the benefits of BBL, which can remove excess sun damage spots, in addition to the resurfacing benefits of the Phoenix. It also provides a single downtime to synergistically target both excessive brown spots and aging skin caused by loss of collagen and ultraviolet light exposure. Another popular combination is ClearV, which is our 1064 YAG laser to remove unwanted telangiectasias, before treating with the Phoenix CO2 to help reduce unwanted wrinkles, tighten pores, and brighten the skin.
