Ocean Drive Dermatology in collaboration with Ocean Drive MedSpa is happy to offer skin care guidance to our patients. We can help demystify what ingredients to use and which ones to avoid. In a social media driven world it is sometimes hard to determine what is truly a breakthrough product or ingredient and what is just clever marketing. Our expert Vero Beach aestheticians and skin care experts will help review your current products and even recommend other products that may be beneficial. No matter how many injectables or lasers a person does, the foundation for great skin is in a consistent skincare routine with excellent products and ingredients. The foundation includes wearing sunscreen daily. There are two major sunscreen types: physical and chemical. Although we prefer physical based sunscreens that include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, in reality any sunscreen is better than none. Find one that feels good on your skin and you are willing to reapply throughout the day when appropriate. Try to utilize an SPF of at least 30 with a recommendation of SPF 50. SPF 30 provides about 93% UV protection while SPF 50 is over 97%.
Don’t forget to add in your hat for the best protection and avoid the intense UV rays between 10 am and 2 pm if possible.
Moisturizers are another important component of a good skin care routine. One of our favorite ingredients are ceramides. These fats or lipids make up a portion of the top layer of skin called the epidermis. They help lock in moisture, but damage from sun exposure and simply age cause the barrier to degrade overtime. Another important ingredient in moisturizers is hyaluronic acid. Although the word acid may have you thinking this is going to dry the skin out it actually helps lock in the moisturizer along with reducing some signs of aging. Thus choosing a moisturizer with ceramides and hyaluronic acid help to rebuild this barrier over time and help lock in the moisture so the skin looks healthier and more hydrated. Don’t forget the retinols! This the powerhouse ingredient that helps the skin look younger and healthier. This special form of Vitamin A over months and years can help increase the production of collagen, which reduces the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles. There are over the counter retinols and then a popular prescription version called tretinoin, which comes in different strengths. At Ocean Drive Dermatology, Vero Beach skin care experts will always recommend the appropriate one for your skin. Usually, this is only applied in the evening before bed. Don’t forget to wear your sunscreen since retinols and tretinoin make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Another heavy hitter in the skincare routine is Vitamin C. This is an absolute must if your skin tolerates Vitamin C serums or creams. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, lighten dark spots, and can also hydrate the skin. If you want another reason to utilize a good Vitamin C serum daily, it also helps promote collagen!
Sunscreen, moisturizers, retinols and vitamin C are the building blocks of a good skin care routine. The next step is to schedule a consultation with one of our Vero Beach skin care experts and aestheticians to create a routine that you can follow on a daily basis. They will help guide your product selection based on your goals and your skin type.
